OLD MAN RIVERS
HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
WRITTEN 1994
The name “Old Man Rivers” was developed one late afternoon as the Old Man himself was at “The Point” gazing down the Ohio River in the direction of the Blennerhassett Island enjoying the beauty of the sunset as it cast a golden glow upon the water. The image of the Old Man and his dog looking down the river at such a sunset was the intended logo as “Old Man Rivers” food service began in approximately 1988. This food service was operated from the Old Man’s 1980 GMC Step-Van and was originally designed to sell food at local fairs, festivals and such. Then due to the Old Man encountering some health problems, the food service came to a halt as he and his wife sought the Lord as to what to do with the truck. They sought the Lord for approximately one year before a Christian brother challenged the Old Man and his wife, Pat, to use the truck for the Lord. The Lord then began to reveal to the Old Man and Pat a vision to minister to those in need: those whom may have “fallen through the cracks” of the normal system for assistance. The Old Man, and his wife Pat, were touched by he vision God revealed to them. They accepted thee challenge and the vision came to life; this vision continues to develop and grow yet today.
The Old Man, whose name is Bob Riffle, has been married to his wife for 33 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. Bob and Pat were saved in 1975. His entire family has come to make a dedication to the Lord Jesus as their personal Savior and he counts that as one of his life’s best blessings. He has been in food service since he was thirteen years old and his wife Pat is a Licensed Practical Nurse(LPN). They take great joy in working side by side to accomplish that which the Lord has set before them for HIS glory.
Since the acceptance of that initial challenge, God has blessed the Old Man Rivers food service to meet the need of many. The Mission of Old Man Rivers began in Parkersburg, WV and fed nine Meals the first day –with the help of a local church and friends. Today, with much of the same help, the Old Man feeds an average of 275 meals per weekend. On Friday of every week, Old Man Rivers also distributes winter clothing such hats, gloves, socks, boots and scarves to those in need. Warm bedding is still very much needed for these people.
